About the Archive This is an ongoing project to preserve the vision of Michael Newberry (1957-). A representational artist, Newberry calls upon a variety of historical influences, notably Rembrandt, the French Impressionists, and Picasso, yet continues to innovate while projecting his unique artistic vision. His major works are typically life-sized canvases, often featuring the nude. This archive features nearly 700 unique works of art, everything from life-sized canvases to thumbnail light studies. Works are tagged by medium, subject, and year for fluid browsing. In addition, there are many photographs of works in their unfinished stages. The Newberry Archive is independently owned and maintained by Brett Holverstott, with the consent of Michael Newberry. About Michael Newberry Newberry began painting at the age of 11, and studied fine art at the University of Southern California. Although he received a postmodern art education, he was mentored by artist Edgar Ewing. He also studied at the Royal Academy at the Hague, and The Free Academy Psychopolis. Newberry has since lived and exhibited in Europe and the United States, painting full time, and acquiring a following of private collectors. From 1990-1994 Newberry taught part-time at the Otis/Parsons Institute in Los Angeles. Newberry continues to paint prolifically and sell his work through the Newberry Gallery in Santa Monica, CA, and through his website. He also offers art classes and a mentoring program. In addition, Newberry expresses his ideas via aesthetic criticism. He has reviewed both postmodern exhibitions, and living representational artists who are doing innovative work. |
